Westwood Update

Welcome Back Westwood!

Welcome Back

Westwood Families and Community,

Welcome back to school! The transition from summer to school is always a big one. Bedtimes change, along with our routines and daily schedules. The transition is always a big one for our students. The structure of summer is always different than that of school. As always, I am incredibly impressed by our students and the way they have jumped right into this school year with kindness, a smile, and a positive attitude.

As we begin the year, our main focus has been to bring our students back to a safe and welcoming environment. We are teaching and practicing classroom and school routines, while also building the community and feel that we want for the year ahead.

Thank you for your partnership with us in setting a positive tone for the school year. I also want to thank our Westwood staff for all of their work, energy, and optimism as we start again!

This year, we are on a "Lost and Forgotten Treasure" hunt that I will share more about as time goes on, but for the staff at Westwood, we have already found our treasure when our students returned.

Welcome back Westwood! We have a special school. We are happy you are a part of it!

Sincerely,

Scott

Secure Campus

Hello Westwood families,

It's great to have our students back on campus! We want to revisit our secure campus expectations for families. Front doors are locked at 9:00 a.m. Any students arriving late need to come through the front office to receive a late pass and go to class from the office.

If you are coming to the office to pick up your student or drop something off, please use the doorbell system. Please ring the bell (wait a few seconds until the TALK button lights up), then press and hold down the TALK button while you talk. Once you release the TALK button, the front office staff can talk to you. Please state your name, your student's name and the reason for your visit. Please have a picture ID readily available as this is required.

Thank you!

A Note From Nurse Daisy

School wide vision screening is scheduled for 9/25.   We do hearing and vision screening in an effort to identify students that may have a hearing/vision deficit.  A student with unidentified, unmet health care needs is unlikely to perform at their full potential, both academically and socially. Please note that these are screenings and do not take the place of a full evaluation by a medical provider.  If your student has been seen by an optometrist in the last year they do not need to be screened at this time.   Washington State Law (WAC 246-760) requires schools to conduct hearing and vision screening of children in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 each year.   We also screen all 4th graders.

  • Vision screening is done using a Spot™ Vision Screener or LEA Symbols Distance and Near vision charts. We ask that students who use corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) wear the lenses during the screening to ensure accurate results. Parents will be notified if their child does not pass the screening or is unable to participate in the screening.  Depending on the method and reason for students that do not pass the screening, the student may have a repeat screening in 1 month or an automatic referral to a full evaluation by an optometrist.

  • Hearing screening is done using equipment providing tonal stimuli at 1000, 2000 and 4000 herts (HZ) at a hearing level of 20 decibels (dB). Parents will be notified if their child does not pass the screening.   Students who do not pass their first hearing screening will be rescreened again in about a month, if they do not pass the second time they will be referred for a more complete evaluation provided by your child's doctor or audiologist.

  • Referrals are done by contacting parents/caregivers by phone and sending home a document outlining the indicators for the more thorough hearing or vision evaluation to take to a provider.  If you need further assistance identifying a vision or hearing care specialist please reach out to me and I can provide you with a list of providers in our area.

Thank you,

Daisy
