Greetings Panther Families,

As August moves along, my excitement for the first day of school continues to mount. That special day is often my favorite of the year, as the energy and optimism shines on the faces of kids and adults.

If your children are returning to Southwood, they know that they are coming back to a place where we all work hard to embrace the Panther Qualities of safety, respect, responsibility and kindness. If your children are new to Southwood, you can trust that our top priorities are their physical and emotional safety, and that they feel that they are an important member in our school family. This foundation helps us make the most of each learning day.

The year ahead is full of promise. I can’t wait to see you all!

Thank you for your patience as we work to solidify our class lists for the year ahead. On Wednesday, 8/20, you will receive an email regarding your child’s class placement. All of our teachers are eager to meet each of their new students!

For our 1st to 5th grade students, our first day of school is Wednesday, August 27th. We start right away on our typical bell schedule:

• Monday to Thursday: 9:00-3:30

• Friday (early release): 9:00-2:15

We have a gradual roll out for our kindergartners to ease the big transition. In the first three days (8/27-8/29) the kindergarten teachers meet with each new student and family individually, and then half the kids have their first full day on Tuesday, 9/2, and the other half have theirs on Wednesday, 9/3. The first day with all kindergarteners together will be Thursday, 9/4. Kindergarten families can anticipate a letter with your specific schedule by Wednesday, 8/20.

Kindergarten Families: After you drop your child off on their first day of school (9/2 or 9/3), we invite you to come to the library for about 20 minutes for the Welcome to Kindergarten Breakfast. You’ll enjoy some breakfast treats and have a chance to meet some of the key faces of the Southwood team.

School breakfast and lunch will be free for all Southwood students this school year!

If your child requires medication at school, an authorization form must be completed by a doctor. This form must be completed each school year.

Nurse Melanie will be on campus during our ice cream social and also on Friday 8/22, 10:00 - 12:00, Monday 8/25, 11:00 - 5:00, and Tuesday 8/26, 9:00 - 1:00 to check in medication prior to the first day of school.
