Message from the Principal |
Greetings Southwood Families!
We’re really excited about the focus of our Character Strong instruction for the month — gratitude! One way to think about gratitude is “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” Practicing gratitude can increase our well-being and even our happiness.
Here are two ideas for bringing the practice of gratitude into your rhythm at home this month:
1. Notice the small things. What are some small, specific things that you are grateful for? Maybe it’s your favorite water cup, the way the cat sleeps on the chair, or when your grandma bakes banana bread. Spend some time as a family thinking of at least 10 small things you’re grateful for, and make it a goal to notice them this week with a smile.
2. Create a Gratitude Jar.
Find a place in your home to display a glass jar. Cut up small slips of paper and place them next to the jar. Use it to collect special people, places, events, and memories that your family is thankful for. Find a time each week to add slips of gratitude, and assist students in writing or drawing their ideas as needed. Having a gloomy day or a challenging moment as a family? Pull out the slips of gratitude and read them aloud together as a reminder of your grateful moments.
Gratitude is contagious — when we take time to appreciate the good around us, we inspire others to do the same. Thank you for helping your children (and all of us) grow in gratitude this month.
With appreciation,
Andy Means

Research has shown that hope is a powerful, learnable, and measurable skill that can have a significant impact on a student’s success and persistence in school. Children who are hopeful tend to have higher self-esteem and social skills, are more likely to set and achieve their goals, and can more easily bounce back from adversity. Specifically, hope involves both the ability to identify ways to achieve goals (pathways) and the motivation to take action towards achieving those goals (agency).
Last year, we began collecting baseline data on student belonging, and this year, we will be expanding our efforts by also measuring students’ levels of hope through the Hope Scale.
You can learn more about the Hope Scale Assessment here.
Opt-Out Information
Participation in the Hope Scale is completely voluntary. While we believe this assessment will be valuable in supporting student growth, we respect your choice as a parent or guardian. If you prefer that your child does not participate in this assessment, you may opt-out by emailing Andy Means @ andrew_means@enumclaw.wednet.edu. Please submit your opt-out request no later than Tuesday, 11/11.
