Southwood Newsleter

Message from the Principal

Greetings Southwood Families!

This year’s Read-A-Thon was a record-setting success. Kids completed hundreds of reading challenges, and we raised a record total of $20,706! Half of the Read-A-Thon donations will provide books for the library, PE and music equipment, and also books, materials and activities for your classroom. The other half will go to support all the other PTO sponsored events and activities such as Spooktacular, Neon Glow Night, Popcorn Friday, fun runs and field day.

To recognize this hard work, I had the privilege of getting duct taped to the wall at today’s Panther Pride Assembly!

Thank you to all the students and families who participated. We are really excited to begin shopping for more books, materials and equipment so that kids can enjoy the fruit of their labor very soon!

On a separate note, I want to let you know about the October skill of the month of responsibility. Our Character Strong curriculum defines responsibility as “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter.

Our 3rd-5th grade students will practice responsibility through goal setting, using the TOP acronym:

  • Target: Visualize your goal and think about why this is important for you.

  • Obstacles: Plan for challenges. If _____ gets in the way, then what can you do?

  • Plan: Create 3 action steps you will need to take to complete your goal.

This technique helps students be more responsible by clarifying different types of goals and taking thoughtful actions to achieve them. Feel free to invite your children into conversation about goal setting and responsibility throughout the month!

Share Fair

Our annual Share Fair was a huge hit this year, for students and adutls. Students got to share their projects with other students and teachers during the day and then to families in the evening. Share Fair creates a sense of belonging for all students by supporting our three guiding questions:

People at my school are friendly to me.
People at my school notice when I am good at something.
I can really be myself at my school.
