Dear Enumclaw School District Community,

Kindergarten Teachers Are Magical

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Mrs. Erin Markquart’s kindergarten classroom at Southwood Elementary. I arrived later in the afternoon, and the classroom was beginning to warm up. I expected the students might be a little tired and cranky, much like I was, but that wasn’t the case at all.

Mrs. Markquart’s students were deeply engaged, focused on completing their school bus projects and carefully writing their names on their work before it would be displayed for all to see. At first, I went largely unnoticed, despite being about four feet taller than most of the students. After asking a few questions and offering some well-deserved compliments on their work, a few curious students wanted to know who I was and why I was there.

Mrs. Markquart noticed the distraction I was beginning to create and, with impeccable timing and skill, transitioned the class to the carpet for an interactive song about the wheels on the bus. This shifted all of our attention and energy to something positive and productive. We sang several verses together before being called up, one by one, to collect our snacks and return to our desks.

I was impressed by how exceptionally these students met expectations. It was only their second full day of school, yet they were already acting as if they had been in class for weeks. Reflecting on my own days teaching much older students, I can honestly say I never demonstrated the same level of mastery that Mrs. Markquart displayed in managing her classroom.

Kudos to our young learners and Mrs. Markquart!

Shaun

September is Attendance Awareness Month with logo and students in class raising hand

September is Attendance Awareness Month

School attendance is a major factor in student academic success. At all grades, students who miss no more than nine days per school year are the most engaged and on track for graduation. In fact, by 6th grade chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Everyone plays a part in student attendance - families and school staff are in this together. To learn more about promoting good school attendance and how you can help, visit www.attendanceworks.org

A Message From Public Health – Seattle & King County and the Target Zero Traffic Safety Team

Welcome back to a new school year! As your children head back to class, Public Health – Seattle & King County wants to help everyone travel safely. Whether you're driving, walking, biking, or riding the bus, here are some key tips to keep in mind:

  • Slow down in school zones. Speed limits save lives, especially near schools.

  • Buckle up, every time. Make sure everyone in the car is safely strapped in.

  • Put your phone away. Distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes. Place your phone in the glove box or switch to “Do Not Disturb.”

  • Stop for school buses.
