Dear Enumclaw School District Community,
A Day at the Pool
With several of our elementary students participating in swim lessons at the city pool, staff occasionally need assistance in areas like the boys’ locker room. This is especially true since many of our elementary-level educators are women, and sometimes a male staff member is needed to help with supervision.
Recently, Southwood second-grade teacher Ms. Coleman reached out for a bit of help, and a few of us from the central office were glad to step in — myself included. My assignment? Help a group of about ten second-grade boys get ready for their swim lesson, then assist them in preparing to return to school afterward.
I have to admit, I had forgotten just how energetic and unpredictable second-grade boys can be! I was also reminded of how easily socks can vanish, how shirts somehow end up on backwards, and how even the simplest directions can turn into mini-adventures.
But I’m happy to report that every student made the most of their swim lesson — the smiles on their faces said it all — and they all returned to school dressed just as their parents and guardians had sent them. Mission accomplished!
Thank you, Ms. Coleman, for the joyful reminder of how meaningful these small moments can be. It’s experiences like these that make this work the best work in the world — and put a big smile on my face.
Shaun

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month! While initially only federally observed for one week in May, honoring Asian-Pacific American Heritage was expanded to be observed for the entire month of May beginning in 1990. May was designated to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the US on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the transcontinental railroad's completion on May 10, 1869. A majority of workers who laid tracks for the railroads were Chinese immigrants.* You can visit the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center to learn more: *www.asianpacificheritage.gov
