Greetings Timberwolf Families!

Today, it’s official: Quarter 1 of the 25-26 school year is in the books! Students have been working hard in their classes which you can see in Skyward. I always like to say the 6th grade year is training students to become secondary students, which means managing more teachers, higher expectations, and more independence in the follow through of the work. For 7th and 8th graders, I love seeing the maturity that comes with time and becoming the leaders of the school.

What have we been busy working on this first quarter outside of the classroom?

* Bringing in a speaker to get students thinking about who they are and how they can create change because everyone is different. Getting more involved is the way to capitalize on your strengths! By the way, a survey is coming on Monday for students to complete if they would like to see a particular club started up! This message continues to live on in the school year!

* We started the year with 8th graders in one hallway and 6th and 7th graders in the main halls- Update: MAJOR difference in traffic patterns and space! We have seen significant changes to behaviors in the halls in case you are wondering. Now if we can get them to be more quiet in passing during 5th period lunch transitions…

* Incorporating more restorative practices for discipline-

-Implementing more AM detentions instead of lunch detentions- we have found students are much more motivated to change behaviors than to have this consequence

-Refining our structured day procedures- we have found students are much more motivated to change behaviors than to have this consequence

-Assigning assigned seats at lunch instead of lunch detentions- we have found students are much more motivated to change behaviors than to have this consequence

-Increased pass system in the lunch room to define purpose when moving around- still allows for movement but in a controlled manner

-Securly Hall Pass- electronic system to help identify systems, trends, and expectations that allow for follow through in a data driven way; we are working out kinks to make sure data (like total time out of class) is accurate reflected

-Fine tuning our Accountability Projects that require students to Reflect-Repair-Rebuild when they have landed themselves in ISS or OSS or HIB (Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying) situations

* WolfMart- we have incorporated a WolfMart every other Friday where students can use their red tickets to “buy” items. The items came from student suggestions from a schoolwide survey! We may not be able to bring Lebron James but we can provide snacks, lunch outside opportunities, and fidgets that they suggested. That’s the same as Lebron, right?

* First social of the year yesterday!! Snowcones, school wide 3 on 3 tournament, dance, board games, art! Good times were had by all. Another staff member summed it up well, after a busy week of weather, schedule changes, and what a typical Halloween week can bring for high energy, it was great to see students have fun together and they managed themselves really well!

*6-7- we have embraced the crazy trend that makes zero sense! Today was fun to see staff jump in with the fun! Be sure to check out the pictures! We like for students to see us having fun at work too.

We are ending this final day in the 1st quarter on Halloween, which is also Battle of the Bridge tonight. Please be sure to check out expectations for the football game and talk to your student if they are attending.

What can you be looking forward to in the future?

Student Led Conferences- please be sure to check out the info below! We are making some changes this year.

Food Drive is still going through Nov. 14th!

Don’t forget NEXT weekend is a 4 day weekend for students!

The highly anticipated High School Battle of the Bridge Football game is this Friday, October 31st, at Pete’s Pool.  We wanted to remind families of Student Expectations while attending school functions, including games.  The same school rules apply to games.

As Friday is Halloween, we wanted to make sure you were aware the same Dress Codes for costumes apply at the game.

Regular school rules regarding the dress code must be followed.

*No masks, full face paint, canes, sticks, or weapon-like items of any kind are allowed. No fake blood or other substances that will spill or cause a mess will be allowed.

*Students may not wear anything suggestive or provocative in nature. No underwear as outerwear will be allowed.

*Nothing that promotes the use of illegal substances or activities, derogatory or disrespectful or portrays violence.

*Students must show respect to other students by not touching, defacing or insulting other students' costumes.

*Students must show respect for others by not choosing costumes that are insensitive and/or offensive to the diverse backgrounds represented by others at our school.

*No costume can be worn that is unsafe or that may create a safety hazard.

We also want to remind our Timberwolf families of the following Student rules at Pete’s Pool:

*No Outside Drinks allowed

*No Backpacks allowed

*No sports ball (footballs, soccer balls, etc) are allowed

*There is no Re-entry allowed for Students.  Once they come in the gates, they must stay within the gates until they leave.  Once they leave the gates, they cannot re-enter.

Finally, please remind your students that they are at the game to watch football and safely socialize. Safe behavior means:

*Keeping Hands and feet to your self

*No throwing anyone to the ground

*Please throw garbage in the trash cans provided

Remember the Three Rs: Respectful, Responsible, Resilient

Unsafe behavior may result in students having to sit with their parents OR asked to leave.

Thank you for taking the time to review this information with your student.

A reminder: Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2 a.m. local time. At this time, clocks will "fall back" one hour to 1 a.m., which means you will gain an extra hour of sleep. As a result, mornings will be brighter and evenings will become darker earlier.

Introduction of the Hope Scale Assessment

Introduction of the Hope Scale Assessment

October 31, 2025

Dear Enumclaw Middle School Families,

At Enumclaw Middle School, we are committed to fostering not only the academic success of our students but also their overall well-being and future employability. As part of our five ESD Commitments, we continue to monitor student well-being through data collection efforts that help us better understand and support their social-emotional growth.

Introducing the Hope Scale Assessment

Research has shown that hope is a powerful, learnable, and measurable skill that can have a significant impact on a student’s success and persistence in school. Children who are hopeful tend to have higher self-esteem and social skills, are more likely to set and achieve their goals, and can more easily bounce back from adversity. Specifically, hope involves both the ability to identify ways to achieve goals (pathways) and the motivation to take action towards achieving those goals (agency).

Last year, we began collecting baseline data on student belonging, and this year, we will be expanding our efforts by also measuring students’ levels of hope through the Hope Scale.

What is the Hope Scale?

The Hope Scale is a set of eight questions for students in grades 3 through 10. The questions assess how well students feel they are doing in their lives, their ability to solve problems, and how confident they are in their future success. The answers are used to calculate scores for pathways and agency, which combined provide an overall “hope” score for each student. The results will help us better understand our students' ability to set and pursue goals and their ability to navigate challenges.

Hope Scale Grades 3-10:

Eight questions:

What school do you attend?

What grade are you in?

I think I am doing pretty well.

I can think of many ways to get the things in life that are most important to me.

I am doing just as well as other kids my age.

When I have a problem, I can come up with lots of ways to solve it.

I think the things that I have done in the past will help me in the future.

Even when others want to quit, I know that I can find ways to solve the problem.

The Children’s Hope Scale uses a six-point response scale with “none of the time” equating to the lowest value of one, and “all of the time” equating to the highest value of six.

.

The Hope Scale will be administered to students (grades 6-8) between November 3, 2025, and November 28, 2025.

Why is this Important?

By measuring hope, we can better support your student’s growth in key areas that contribute to their well-being and success. Understanding where they stand in terms of hope and goal-setting will allow us to tailor support and interventions that help them develop these critical skills.

Opt-Out Information

Participation in the Hope Scale is completely voluntary. While we believe this assessment will be valuable in supporting student growth, we respect your choice as a parent or guardian. If you prefer that your child does not participate in this assessment, you may opt-out by contacting Office Manager Kelly Rettinhouse at Kelly_Rettinhouse@Enumclaw.wednet.edu or coming into the office and advise us you wish your student to Opt-Out.. Please submit your opt-out request as soon as possible, as we will start the survey on Monday, November 3rd..

Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure the success and well-being of your student(s).

Sincerely,
Lindsay Richter
Principal, Enumclaw Middle School

Hi Families,

The Book Fair is BACK! We will have a Scholastic Book Fair this year during conference week in the EMS Library. Give the gift of reading by stopping by to purchase great books and support building our library book supply. Students will preview the book fair on November 18th and can make a wish list. The fair will be open 11/18-11/25 to shop. Follow our bookfair homepage: here. More details will be coming soon.

Mrs. Timko's classes have been busy this first quarter.  Her 3rd and 4th period classes designed, built, tested and evaluated Bridge Designs.  The 5th period class designed, built, tested and evaluated Solar Cars.

Mrs. Demerjian's art students decorated Sugar Skulls, which are now on display in the hallway.

The 8th Grade Leadership students want to do something for Cancer Awareness.  They invited students and staff to honor people they know who have passed away from cancer (Purple rings),  are battling cancer ((Pink rings)  or who are in remission or have survived cancer (White rings).

Fall Social & Halloween Fun for All

On Thursday, we had our Fall Social.  There was dancing, games, Sno-Cones, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and drawing.  A little bit of something for all to enjoy.  Friday (Halloween!!) several staff members embraced the 6-7 Trend.  Others were just enjoying the day.
